Kazan Nunnery

    Kazan convent was founded with the existing female community in 1881. The architectural ensemble of the monastery includes several churches, including Kazan, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Russia.

    The main shrine, which was kept in the monastery was an icon of the Mother of God, which belonged to the Byzantine emperor Andronicus III and during an attack by the Turks was transferred to the Russian consul. However, in 1984, when the premises were used as a monastery warehouses, the icon was stolen.

    In 1991 the monastery began to revive, its buildings have been restored and now represent a valuable architectural monuments. Since the monastery holds Skitsky statute for visitors it is open only on weekends and public days.
